“Cultural Heritage Conservation, Community Engagement, and Sustainable Development: Lessons learnt from the Italian Development Cooperation in Southeast Asia”

Thursday 15 October 2020

From 3:00 pm (Myanmar time) – 10.30 am (Italian time)

Background

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a universal action plan adopted unanimously by the Member States of the United Nations on 25 September 2015. With its 17 Goals and 169 Targets, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development marks a turning point for International Cooperation. It boosts a shift towards a more effective approach, based on concrete actions towards a development that is sustainable in social, economic and environmental terms.

Cultural Heritage, both tangible and intangible, is a fundamental component of human experience and, with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, the international community recognizes its importance for the success of sustainable development.

The 2030 Agenda is the first international plan of action that highlights how Culture can be a cross-cutting tool, with a pivotal role for achieving a sustainable future. It has the power to create decent work and economic growth, while reducing inequalities, protecting the environment, and building peaceful and inclusive societies.

The 2030 Agenda therefore opens up new avenues for integrating the protection of Cultural Heritage into social and economic development policies, in order to contribute to a transformative vision for a more inclusive, equitable and just world.

Objective

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Agenda 2030’s adoption, the Embassy of Italy in Myanmar and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation – Yangon Office have organized the webinar:

“Cultural Heritage Conservation, Community Engagement, and Sustainable Development: Lessons learnt from the Italian Development Cooperation in Southeast Asia”

The online event will take place on October 15th at 3:00 pm Myanmar time (10:30 am in Italy), in the framework of the Sustainable Development Festival organized by the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS).

Stemming from the belief that cultural heritage conservation and enhancement can be a driving force for economic and social development, the webinar represents a venue for discussing challenges and strategies to implement the 2030 Agenda, reflecting on the interventions of the Italian Cultural Cooperation in Myanmar and Southeast Asia over the last 20 years.

Building on a long-standing commitment in the cultural sector, the purpose of this event is to share the results achieved by the Italian Cooperation in Southeast Asia (also in line with the recently expanded mandate of the AICS Yangon Office, which is responsible for Myanmar, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia).

By showcasing how much cultural cooperation is essential for the objectives established by the 2030 Agenda, the hope is that new partners can join us in the effort to integrate culture into economic development, education, environmental protection and social inclusion initiatives.

The event will be held online (Microsoft Teams) and will be open to everybody.
